Why is training your dog important?

The 5 basic commands
1. Sit
This is the first command any dog should learn. Hold a treat close to their nose, move your hand up, and when they sit, give the reward and say 'sit'.
2. Stay
Once they know how to sit, ask them to stay. Open your palm in front of them and take a step back. If they stay, reward them.
3. Come
Essential for safety. Crouch down, open your arms and say 'come' in a cheerful voice. When they arrive, give lots of affection and a treat.
4. Down
With the dog sitting, lower a treat from their nose to the floor. When they lie down, say 'down' and reward them.
5. Leave it
Essential to prevent them from picking up dangerous objects. When they have something in their mouth, offer a treat and say 'leave it'. When they drop it, give the reward.
